Dr. Keun Ryu, the founder and director of the HYU (Hanyang University) Turbomachinery Laboratory, is a faculty member in the mechanical engineering department at Hanyang University. Dr. Ryu has an established international reputation as a notable researcher in the fields of gas film lubrication and rotordynamics of small turbomachinery. His research activities include rotordynamic design, modeling, prediction and evaluation of high performance turbomachinery. He has investigated static and dynamic characteristics of fluid film bearings and seals, and developed gas bearing applications. In particular, since 2003, Dr. Ryu has advanced the analysis and experimental parameter identification of gas bearings for oil-free turbomachinery. To progress the introduction of gas bearings into mid-sized gas turbine engines, he conducted comprehensive rotordynamic and shock tests under severe operating conditions. At BorgWarner Turbo Systems (Dec. 2010 - Feb. 2013),  Dr. Ryu advanced significant progress in the development program for new automotive turbocharger systems including oil-free turbochargers and electrically assisted turbochargers. In particular, he has made enduring contributions to the product and technology development of gas bearings for applications in turbochargers. Since 2017, he has been leading the development of rotor-bearing-seal systems and cryogenic fluid film bearings for turbopumps and electric-pumps in liquid propellant rocket engines.
